iPhone OS 3.0 jailbreak

The iPhone Dev-Team says the upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 can be jailbroken but issued a warning to some 3G users eager to get that shiny new copy-paste feature.

Apple unveiled on Tuesday some of what it says will be 100 new features coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch with the new version of the mobile operating system. A beta version was made available immediately to everyone in the iPhone Developer Program, and it didn't take long for developers to get cracking on iPhone OS 3.0.

The Dev-Team confirmed that the new version is "jailbreakable" on all devices in a blog posted Tuesday. But they said people who've already unlocked their 3G devices with Yellowsn0w will run into trouble if they download the 3.0 beta.

This is because Yellowsn0w jailbreak capitalizes on the device's baseband radio, which is used to link up the device with the network and which will be changed by the iPhone 3.0 update, according to InfoWorld's Ian Paul. The Dev-Team warns that upgrading to 3.0 with Yellowsn0w installed will cause people to lose Yellowsn0w and will be unable to get it back.

Needless to say, the Dev-Team weren't the only people tinkering around with the iPhone beta. One developer (via MacRumors) was able to activate the iPhone's tethering feature via a USB cable. Apple announced on Tuesday that it had built in the capability to tether an iPhone to a laptop via Bluetooth. But the company said it's up to individual carriers whether they want to make it available on their networks and that the feature wouldn't be widely available until that happened.

I strongly feel Apple will surely achieve its aim and announced to 10 million iPhone sold.

In September, just 74 days after the release date, Apple successfully achieved a mark of 1 million iPhone sale. The price cut was the major reason for the increase in sales in US.

As Apple iPhone is being launched everywhere in countries like France and Germany besides the US, how can Japan be left behind. Apple is now in talks with Japan’s mobile phone carriers to introduce iPhone in Japan.

Apple and NTT DoCoMo are still in negotiating terms for introducing the iPhone as Apple wants to receive the same percentage of subscriber revenue with NTT DoCoMo like it receives from rest of its carriers.

The 'yellowsn0w' unlocker allows third-party SIMs to be used on any iPhone 3G, bringing freedom to the handset for the first time.
The final disadvantage to owning a 3G iPhone compared to its original 2G incarnation has been removed this week with the news that the iPhone Dev Team has released a tool to allow the handsets to be used with any provider.

According to The Unofficial Apple Weblog's report, the hack – dubbed 'yellowsn0w' – has been confirmed as allowing users with the latest modem firmware to use their handsets on any carrier. With the iPhone 3G now available on pay-as-you-go in the UK, this allows anyone to purchase the device and then use it on their pre-existing contract – arguably something they should be able to do anyway.

While there are plenty of reports of success – both in the UK and around the world – the application isn't without its foibles. The Dev Team themselves describe the tool as “beta software [...] use it at your own risk,” and there are known bugs regarding its handling of SIM cards with STK menus resulting in infrequent hangs during the unlocking process. Despite this, the existence of an unlocking tool finally brings the iPhone 3G to the same level of freedom that its older 2G brother enjoyed.

While the comments on the article are by and large positive, one user – Arpit Gupta – has spotted an interesting bug when using the QuickPwn tool to perform the pre-unlocking jailbreak on a 2008 MacBook: the tool freezes if an on-board USB port is used for the connection to the iPhone. Gupta's solution to this is to use a USB hub instead of an on-board port, which allowed him to jailbreak and unlock successfully.

Unlocking the iPhone 3G - or maybe not

Gadget blogs on New Year's Day were aflutter with word that an application called Yellowsn0w was available for those who want to unlock the iPhone 3G

CrunchGear, for one, posted a graphically enhanced, QuickPwn-focused spin on jailbreaking the iPhone and making use of the Yellowsn0w instructions from the Dev-Team Blog. Way at the bottom, though, it points out that "this is all in beta and there is no guarantee of success." It follows with this note:

UPDATE - I haven't been able to get it to work on two iPhone 3Gs, both with fresh 2.2 firmware and baseband. I've heard plenty of people HAVE had luck, however, so it seems to be an either/or thing. I suspect some cells aren't accepting the iPhones as valid equipment.

Gizmodo, meanwhile, reports that while Yellowsn0w is "very easy to install," alas "it doesn't work right," and takes the Dev-Team folks to task:

Even while this is labeled as a beta, it saddens me that the iPhone Dev Team has embraced the damn beta culture just to make the release on a cute date. It looks like the old days of solid versions are long gone by.

The Gizmodo account also cites a poll of 67 people who'd tried out Yellowsn0w, with "it doesn't work" outdoing "it worked" by a margin of about 2-to-1.

Over at The Boy Genius Report, things seem to have worked out more favorably. Says Boy Genius, "It's not without a few hiccups but it definitely works and it works well."
