iPhone OS 3.0 jailbreak

The iPhone Dev-Team says the upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 can be jailbroken but issued a warning to some 3G users eager to get that shiny new copy-paste feature.

Apple unveiled on Tuesday some of what it says will be 100 new features coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch with the new version of the mobile operating system. A beta version was made available immediately to everyone in the iPhone Developer Program, and it didn't take long for developers to get cracking on iPhone OS 3.0.

The Dev-Team confirmed that the new version is "jailbreakable" on all devices in a blog posted Tuesday. But they said people who've already unlocked their 3G devices with Yellowsn0w will run into trouble if they download the 3.0 beta.

This is because Yellowsn0w jailbreak capitalizes on the device's baseband radio, which is used to link up the device with the network and which will be changed by the iPhone 3.0 update, according to InfoWorld's Ian Paul. The Dev-Team warns that upgrading to 3.0 with Yellowsn0w installed will cause people to lose Yellowsn0w and will be unable to get it back.

Needless to say, the Dev-Team weren't the only people tinkering around with the iPhone beta. One developer (via MacRumors) was able to activate the iPhone's tethering feature via a USB cable. Apple announced on Tuesday that it had built in the capability to tether an iPhone to a laptop via Bluetooth. But the company said it's up to individual carriers whether they want to make it available on their networks and that the feature wouldn't be widely available until that happened.

Apple iPhone expects $5 million of Sale at Macworld, in Jan?

June 29th was the launch date of Apple iPhone, almost 6 months. Now, Apple is all set to announce their aim of selling around 5 million iPhone at the Macworld 2008, held in January 2008, states 9to5mac.

It is said that out of the 5 million targets, the company mentioned that 1 million sales is going to accomplished from Europe itself. However, the country did show a very-low sales figure.

The next goal, after the 5 million mark, is the 10 million mark, which is expected to be acquired by the end of December 2008. By January, Apple will achieve aim of 5 million sales, which is half of their goal.

Earlier, news rolled out on internet that iPhone sales have captured around 27 % of America’s smartphone market in Q4. Apple is soon releasing iPhone in Japan, China, Spain and many more countries.

I strongly feel Apple will surely achieve its aim and announced to 10 million iPhone sold.

In September, just 74 days after the release date, Apple successfully achieved a mark of 1 million iPhone sale. The price cut was the major reason for the increase in sales in US.

Apple iPhone may be released in Japanese Market soon

As Apple iPhone is being launched everywhere in countries like France and Germany besides the US, how can Japan be left behind. Apple is now in talks with Japan’s mobile phone carriers to introduce iPhone in Japan.

Apple and NTT DoCoMo are still in negotiating terms for introducing the iPhone as Apple wants to receive the same percentage of subscriber revenue with NTT DoCoMo like it receives from rest of its carriers.
NTT DoCoMo to discuss about the launch of iPhone in Japan.

Thus Steve Jobs, Chief Executive of Apple, recently met Masao Nakamura, President, NTT DoCoMo.

Apple is also talking with Softbank in case the deal with NTT DoCoMo gets cancelled, then they could proceed with this other operator.

As Apple iPhone has all the features of the iPod with mobile phone features.

Apple has plans to launch iPhone in Asia. In fact, Apple has been in talks with China to launch iPhones in the Chinese market. Meanwhile, Indian consumers are also expecting the iPhone to be introduced in the country by the next year.

Apple is the World’s Third Largest Smartphone Maker, thanks to the iPhone

Tech giant Apple may be new to the mobile phone market. But, with the launch of the iPhone, the company created waves in the industry. Now, it has emerged that Apple is the world’s third largest smartphone manufacturer thanks to its revolutionary iPhone.

This title was bestowed upon Apple based on the sales of its iPhone which was only launched in June 2007.

A very astonishing fact is that Apple currently sells the iPhone solely in four countries and that too with rather costly two year-long contracts. This makes Apple quite outstanding in the mobile phone market, considering the above facts.

According to market sources, Apple has shipped 2,320,840 units of the iPhone in Q4 2007. Leading the way in the smart phone market are Research in Motion and Nokia.

“When you consider that it launched part way through the year, with limited operator and country coverage, and essentially just one product, Apple has shown very clearly that it can make a difference and has sent a wake-up call to the market leaders,” said Canalys’ senior analyst Pete Cunningham.

iPhone 3G unlocker released

The 'yellowsn0w' unlocker allows third-party SIMs to be used on any iPhone 3G, bringing freedom to the handset for the first time.
The final disadvantage to owning a 3G iPhone compared to its original 2G incarnation has been removed this week with the news that the iPhone Dev Team has released a tool to allow the handsets to be used with any provider.

According to The Unofficial Apple Weblog's report, the hack – dubbed 'yellowsn0w' – has been confirmed as allowing users with the latest modem firmware to use their handsets on any carrier. With the iPhone 3G now available on pay-as-you-go in the UK, this allows anyone to purchase the device and then use it on their pre-existing contract – arguably something they should be able to do anyway.

While there are plenty of reports of success – both in the UK and around the world – the application isn't without its foibles. The Dev Team themselves describe the tool as “beta software [...] use it at your own risk,” and there are known bugs regarding its handling of SIM cards with STK menus resulting in infrequent hangs during the unlocking process. Despite this, the existence of an unlocking tool finally brings the iPhone 3G to the same level of freedom that its older 2G brother enjoyed.

If you're an iPhone 3G owner eager to get your unlock on, CrunchGear's John Biggs has kindly made a step-by-step guide – complete with pictures – to walk you through the process. While the comments on the article are by and large positive, one user – Arpit Gupta – has spotted an interesting bug when using the QuickPwn tool to perform the pre-unlocking jailbreak on a 2008 MacBook: the tool freezes if an on-board USB port is used for the connection to the iPhone. Gupta's solution to this is to use a USB hub instead of an on-board port, which allowed him to jailbreak and unlock successfully.

If you're an eternally curious hacker who wants to see how the team created 'yellowsn0w', the source code has kindly been provided.

Any iPhone owners eager to move to a different mobile provider, or is the unlocker more of a proof of concept than a useful tool? Share your thoughts over in the forums.
